Earlier this week, we heard from a student who matched in January. As our class is about to match into residency , graduate from medical school in a few short months and transition from medical students to physicians, it seems appropriate to reflect on this transformation. With its rich history in social medicine—its dedication to training compassionate and caring physicians and working in communities where good healthcare is needed the most— Albert Einstein College of Medicine seemed the place for me.
Four years later, I can say I have not been disappointed. My classmates and I were profoundly affected by the relationships we developed with our patients. Together, we gained a new understanding of the healthcare system through the eyes of patients living in the Bronx. The experience affirmed my goal of positive community involvement as a physician, and has shaped my interest in effecting future systemic change in our healthcare delivery systems. As third years, my classmates and I participated in collegial academic and evidence-based discussions on rounds and began taking responsibility for serving as intermediaries between medical knowledge and our patients.
As fourth years, we found that each day brought unexpected challenges, and I learned the importance of flexibility and creativity in tackling new problems. I got a sense of how hard work and long hours in the hospital could be rewarding. Some moments were joyful, such as watching a child who yesterday was gasping for air run down the hallway, or taking a break from note-writing to share chocolate ice cream with a patient who was previously refusing to eat.
These patient interactions were reminders of the trust placed in us and of our responsibility as future physicians. The strong foundation I received at Einstein really resonated as I travelled around the country describing my experiences during interviews and then carefully considered what kind of training I was seeking for residency.

Typically, you do clinical rotations, also called clerkships, during the third and fourth year of medical school. Rotations give you firsthand experience working with patients in various specialties under direct supervision of a faculty member, fellow, or resident.
To provide students the opportunity to gain additional experience in 1 the diagnosis and management of patients encountered in a Family Practice in-patient service, and 2 improve technical and procedural skills involved in the care of such patients. The student will be the primary provider of care for the hospital patients of the Service, operating at the level of a PGY-1 Resident with appropriate supervision by housestaff and attending physicians. The student will be integrated into the regular work schedule of the Service to include the taking of night and weekend call or of assigned shifts at the rate of other PGY-1 Residents.
The student will maintain the medical record in a fashion identical to that of a PGY-1 Resident with the counter-signed admission History and Physical and daily progress notes entered in the patient chart. The student will perform, with direct supervision, patient procedures that are expected of a PGY-1 Resident. The student will be evaluated by the ward resident and attending physician.

Fourth-Year Medical Students Meet Their Match Fourth-Year Medical Students Meet Their Match March 19, On Friday, March 16, the sense of nervousness, excitement and anticipation was palpable in the Drexel University Main Building Auditorium where fourth-year medical students had gathered with friends, family and College of Medicine faculty and staff to learn where they would be spending the next three to seven years of their lives. Known as Match Day, the annual event takes place at noon, when thousands of medical students across the country open white envelopes to learn where they will do their residency training.
Following a countdown, the auditorium erupted as people high-fived, hugged and cried. View photos from Match Day After completing a lengthy interview process, graduating medical students submit a list of programs where they wish to train, ranked in order of preference, to the National Resident Matching Program NRMP. Program directors also submit a list of applicants whom they have interviewed and wish to train, in order of preference.
Based on these combined preferences, the NRMP uses an algorithm to determine match outcomes.
